In short: A monorail crane is an electric chain or wire rope hoist travelling along a single track, usually an I-beam. It is a simple and economical solution where loads are moved along a fixed path between workstations or to a loading point.
What is a monorail crane?
In a monorail system the hoist travels on a single beam suspended from the roof or a supporting structure. The track can be straight or curved, so loads can be carried from a machine to a loading bay in one movement.
Aylen designs, manufactures and installs monorail systems, from beam selection and suspensions to hoist, trolley and power supply.
Applications
- Moving parts between stations on assembly and production lines
- Machine loading and die changes
- Loading bays and truck loading points
- Maintenance areas for pumps and motors
- Long, narrow areas where a bridge crane is not required
Options
- Electric chain hoist or wire rope hoist
- Motorised or manual trolley
- Straight, curved or switch tracks
- Festoon or busbar power supply
- Inverter speed control, limit switches and overload protection
Monorail cranes are typically used up to about 10 tonnes. See our 1–2 t monorail crane; the C-profile rail used for the festoon power supply is among our spare parts.
Monorail or overhead crane?
If loads always follow the same path, a monorail is more economical. If loads must reach any point in the hall, a single girder overhead crane is more suitable.

FAQ
What load can a monorail crane carry?
Monorail cranes are generally used for loads up to about 10 tonnes; the exact capacity depends on the beam, suspension spacing and supporting structure.
Can a monorail track be curved?
Yes. With a suitably bent beam and a trolley designed for curves, loads can be carried around corners.
