In short: A gantry crane carries its girder on legs travelling on rails at ground level, so it works outdoors without a building structure. A semi-gantry crane runs on a ground rail on one side and on a building runway on the other.
What is a gantry crane?
A gantry crane carries the main girder on two legs whose wheels travel on rails laid on the ground. As no supporting building is required, gantry cranes are widely used in stockyards, shipyards, precast concrete plants and steel or scrap yards.
What is a semi-gantry crane?
In a semi-gantry crane one end of the girder rests on a leg travelling on a ground rail, the other end on a runway along the building columns. It is used along building façades or as a second crane below an existing overhead crane.
Design considerations
- Outdoor conditions: wind load, storm locks (rail clamps) and anemometer
- Ground and rails: rail foundations suitable for the wheel loads
- Cantilevers: girder ends extending beyond the rails for truck loading
- Corrosion: paint system and protection class for outdoor use
- Power supply: cable reel or busbar
Options
- Single or double girder gantry crane
- Electric wire rope hoist, main and auxiliary hook
- Cabin or radio remote control, inverter drives
- Load cell, anti-collision and anti-sway
We design gantry and semi-gantry cranes for your site and loads, manufacture them in Eskişehir and install them on site. For indoor solutions see the double girder overhead crane.

FAQ
What is the difference between a gantry crane and an overhead crane?
An overhead crane runs on a runway supported by the building columns; a gantry crane travels on ground rails on its own legs and needs no building.
When is a semi-gantry crane used?
Where a runway can be installed on one side (building columns) but not on the other, or as a second crane below an existing overhead crane.
