In short: A double girder overhead crane uses a crab (trolley) running on rails on top of two main girders. It is designed for high capacities, large spans, maximum hook height and intensive multi-shift operation.
What is a double girder overhead crane?
A double girder overhead crane consists of two parallel main girders and a crab travelling on rails on top of them. Because the crab runs above and between the girders, the hook can rise higher than with a single girder crane in the same building.
Aylen builds double girder cranes up to 150 tonnes, designed for your site. Girder calculations, wheel loads and mechanism selection follow FEM and DIN standards.
When is a double girder crane needed?
- High capacities (typically above 10 tonnes)
- Wide production halls
- Buildings where maximum hook height is essential
- Heavy duty classes (FEM 3m and above, ISO M6–M8)
- Auxiliary hook, maintenance platforms, cabin or special lifting attachments
Advantages
- High capacity and stiffness even on large spans
- Higher hook position
- Suitable for heavy duty with frequent cycles
- Easy maintenance from walkways on the girders
Options
- Main hook + auxiliary hook
- Inverter drives on all motions
- Cabin or radio remote control
- Load cell, anti-sway, anti-collision and condition monitoring
- Grabs, magnets, spreader beams and process applications
- Equipment for high temperature, dusty or explosive (ATEX) environments
Applications
Steel mills and foundries, heavy machinery manufacturing, power plants, steel fabrication shops, die and press lines and large warehouses.
Examples by capacity: 20 ton overhead crane, 50 ton overhead crane. For price factors see overhead crane price.

FAQ
What capacity can a double girder crane have?
Aylen manufactures double girder overhead cranes up to 150 tonnes, designed to the application.
Why is a double girder crane more expensive?
Two girders, a crab with its own travel mechanism and stronger components require more material and work; in return you get higher capacity, larger span and higher hook position.
Can a double girder crane have an auxiliary hook?
Yes. A smaller auxiliary hook can be added for faster handling of light loads or for turning loads.
